DIY Decorating Idea
Dried Orange Christmas Garland
String translucent orange slices into a simple natural indoor decoration.
Make this idea your own
Dried citrus brings warm colour to a summer Christmas without needing glitter or plastic. Make a short garland for a shelf, then check it regularly: humidity affects drying and storage, particularly near kitchens.
Materials
- 2 firm oranges
- Sharp knife and chopping board for an adult
- Paper towel
- Wire rack over a baking tray
- 1.5 m cotton twine
- Large blunt needle or small skewer used by an adult
Step by step
- An adult cuts oranges into even slices approximately 4 mm thick, discarding the end pieces. Pat both sides gently with paper towel.
- Arrange in one layer on the rack. Dry at 100°C conventional for approximately 3–5 hours, turning hourly and watching closely near the end. Remove individual slices as they dry.
- Cool in a dry, airy place. Check that the centres feel dry rather than sticky or damp; return under-dried slices to the oven. Cool completely before assembling.
- An adult makes two small holes near the rind of each slice. Thread twine through both holes so each slice faces forwards.
- Leave roughly 5 cm between slices, knotting twine beside each to hold its position. Tie hanging loops at both ends and display indoors.
Useful tips
- Keep slices evenly thin for more consistent drying.
- Inspect regularly and discard any slice with mould, softness or a musty smell; never store while damp.
Safety and storage
Adult knife and oven task. Decorations are not food. Keep twine away from young children and pets, and display away from flames and heat sources. Use LED lighting only nearby.
