Put worn cotton shirts, leftover sewing fabric or a damaged tablecloth to work. The simple tied-strip version needs no sewing machine or hot glue, and its colours can suit a relaxed New Zealand Christmas.

Prep: 60 minutes

Materials

  • 1 smooth wooden craft hoop, approximately 20 cm diameter
  • About 80–100 cotton strips, each 2 × 18 cm
  • Fabric scissors
  • 40 cm ribbon for a bow
  • 25 cm cord for hanging

Step by step

  1. Wash and dry reused fabric. Remove buttons, seams and damaged areas, then cut strips. Start with 80; the number needed varies with fabric thickness.
  2. Place the middle of one strip behind the hoop. Bring both ends to the front and tie a firm double knot around the hoop, leaving the tails pointing outward.
  3. Continue around the circle, alternating fabrics. Push the knots close together so they cover the wood without twisting the hoop.
  4. Hold the wreath upright and fill visible gaps with extra strips. Turn individual knots until the fabric looks full on the front.
  5. Tie ribbon into a bow at the bottom. Attach a short hanging loop directly around the hoop at the top, check every knot and hang from a suitable indoor hook.

Useful tips

  • Try green, cream and burgundy scraps with one patterned accent.
  • Keep strips a similar length, then lightly trim stray tails after filling the hoop.

Safety and storage

Adults handle fabric scissors; supervise children tying strips. This is an indoor decoration, not a toy. Keep hanging cord and loose fabric out of reach of small children, and away from heaters, cooking areas and candles.
