Keep Christmas lunch conversation flowing with a low centrepiece people can see over. This loose arrangement can be dismantled after the season, with no floral foam or permanent glue required.

Prep: 20 minutesAllow: Air-drying time if collected cones are damp

Materials

  • 1 shallow tray, approximately 30 × 20 cm
  • 8–12 clean, fully dry pinecones
  • 3 shatter-resistant baubles, approximately 4 cm
  • 1 short indoor battery LED string with a secure battery compartment
  • Soft brush and cloth

Step by step

  1. Source pinecones already fallen on private property with the owner's permission, or use purchased craft cones. Brush off dirt outdoors and check for insects. Let damp cones air-dry thoroughly before use.
  2. Clean and dry the tray. Place the largest cones near the middle, with smaller ones around them. Leave a gap around the tray edge.
  3. Check the lights and batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions. Arrange the LED wire loosely between cones; do not pinch, twist sharply or cover its battery pack.
  4. Place baubles into stable gaps, keeping their hanging loops tucked away. Conceal the battery pack behind, rather than beneath, the cones so its switch and compartment remain accessible.
  5. Move the tray into place and check that nothing rolls when gently nudged. Turn lights off when unattended.

Useful tips

  • Keep the display low and separate from serving dishes.
  • Reuse cones next year only if completely dry and free of mould.

Safety and storage

LED only: never add candles. Do not collect native or protected plant material, or take from reserves without permission. Keep batteries, wire and small decorations away from children and pets; follow all lighting instructions.
