DIY Decorating Idea
Recycled Paper Christmas Chain
Give wrapping-paper offcuts a second celebration as a colourful indoor garland.

Make this idea your own
A paper chain is an easy shared project for a warm December afternoon. Choose a few coordinating colours, or let every family member contribute a different paper. Slightly heavier paper holds its shape better than tissue.
Materials
- 3–4 A4 sheets of reused paper or sturdy wrapping-paper offcuts
- Ruler and pencil
- Child-safe scissors
- Glue stick or small pieces of paper tape
- 2 removable hooks suitable for your wall
Step by step
- Flatten and check the paper. Remove old staples, tape and damaged areas. Mark strips approximately 2 cm wide and 15 cm long; cut about 30 strips to begin.
- Curl one strip into a ring with a 1.5 cm overlap. Glue the overlapping ends firmly and press until they hold.
- Slide a second strip through the first ring, then join its own ends. Continue linking one new ring through the previous ring.
- Alternate colours or repeat a simple three-colour pattern. If a joint springs open, reinforce it with a small piece of tape.
- Let glued joints set fully. Lift the chain gently and hang between the hooks with a relaxed curve, leaving doors and walkways clear.
Useful tips
- Make several short chains and link them together once dry.
- Photograph the colour order before packing away supplies so you can continue later.
Safety and storage
Use child-safe scissors and supervise young makers. Hang indoors, away from heaters, cooking areas, lights that become hot and open flames. Keep loops and hanging decorations away from cots and young children.
