DIY Decorating Idea
Reused-Jar LED Christmas Lanterns
Wrap clean jars with paper bands and add battery tealights for gentle festive light.
Make this idea your own
Give a shelf or indoor Christmas table a gentle glow with reused jars. Keep the paper decoration removable so the jars can return to everyday use afterwards.
Materials
- 3 clean empty glass jars, approximately 250–400 ml
- 3 battery LED tealights with screw-secured battery covers
- 3 paper strips, each 5 cm wide and long enough to wrap its jar
- Paper tape
- Pencil and child-safe scissors
- Soft cloth
Step by step
- An adult checks jars for chips and cracks. Remove labels, wash thoroughly and dry inside and out. Do not use damaged glass.
- Wrap a paper strip around each jar and mark where it overlaps by 1 cm. Trim to length, then lay it flat.
- Fold the strip lightly and snip small diamond openings along the fold, keeping at least 1 cm of uncut paper around its edges. Unfold and flatten.
- Wrap the band around the outside of the jar and tape the overlapping ends to each other. Keep paper away from the rim and inside of the jar.
- Switch on the LED tealights and place one in each open jar. Set jars on a flat, stable surface with space between them. Switch off before leaving the room.
Useful tips
- Try translucent tracing paper if already available.
Safety and storage
Use battery LEDs only, never real candles. Adults handle glass. Keep jars out of reach of young children, and keep button batteries securely enclosed; a swallowed battery is an emergency. These open jars are for dry indoor display only, not hanging.
